Centre of Byzantine, Modern Greek and Cypriot Studies

Culture meeting

Organization: Alliance Française of Granada

Co-organization: Centre of Byzantine, Modern Greek and Cypriot of Granada

From the 12th of November to the 12th of December are going to take place a series of acts concerning the music of rebetico and its origins in the Greek community of the Asia Minor, which has been violently uprooted from its homeland after the unfortunate war with Turkey in 1922. This historic event is known by the name of "Asia Minor Catastrophe" and still lives on in the collective memory of the Greeks and, above all, of the descendants of almost one and a half million people who were forced to move to what is now the state of Greece. With them they brought their music and dance that were later merged with the ones of other remaining Greek regions creating the songs “rebetica”.

In response to the presence of the Anou Skan song and dance Company, that is going to offer a representation on November 19, 2014, at 21:00h in the theater Isabel la Catolica, a number of parallel activities are going to take place in Granada that are going to include two panel discussions on the "Asia Minor Catastrophe" and the songs of rebético, music and dance workshops, as well as a film series, all related to the same genre and its historical and social context.
